Mark
Phelan is ABD. So he is currently working on his D. In it
he identifies metaphors (and perhaps figurative utterances
more generally) as those utterances which have an illocutionary
force and a perlocutionary effect which involve distinct propositional
contents that are both enrichments of the logical form encoded
in the utterance itself. (For explanation and qualifications,
contact Mark.) Aside from researching metaphor and pragmatics,
Mark is also interested in compositionality, contextualism
(in epistemology and language generally), and the folk concept
of intentionality. One of two of his papers on this last topic,
“The folk strike back: Or, why you didn’t do it
intentionally, though it was bad and you knew it,” written
with Hagop Sarkissian, is forthcoming in Philosophical Studies.
When not writing, Mark enjoys assembling Mr. Potato Head and
reading Goodnight Moon.
