Northwestern University's Materials Research Science & Engineering Center (NU-MRSEC). The Center was established in the Fall of 1996 through a grant from the National Science Foundation. Prior to 1996, the Center operated under the NSF Materials Research Laboratory Program. Since its inception, the NU-MRSEC has provided synergistic and interactive programs in research, education, industrial collaboration, information dissemination and technology transfer, and launched new initiatives to address the changing needs of our society. The center creates a unique interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary environment that allows members to undertake materials research of a scope and complexity that would not be feasible under traditional funding. Center members take pride in the underlying theme of their work: "to advance materials research and education to improve the quality of life."The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program provides opportunities for undergraduates to engage in hands-on materials-related research at Northwestern University for a 9-week period over the summer. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, undergraduates with at least one year left to complete degree, and majoring in materials science, physics, chemistry, or engineering.
