Synopsis
The University of Kansas offers NFS Summer Fellowships for Undergraduate Research Experiences in Chemistry.  Students work under faculty supervision on a basic research problem of their choice in one of the four fields of chemistry; analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical--or combinations of these.

Many projects are interdisciplinary and may be classified as Biological, Chemical Education Computational, Environmental, Materials, Medicinal or Pharmaceutical Chemistry. (Specific projects suggested by the faculty.) The program includes weekly Friday seminars where participants come together to hear about career opportunities, ethical and other professional issues, and ongoing research in the Department. A highlight of the summer is a final research symposium where students present posters describing their projects. Many participants have presented their research at regional or national meetings and have been listed as co-authors of published research papers.

Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents, currently enrolled as undergraduates majoring in the biological or physical sciences, an must not graduate before December 2004.  Applications from minorities and others underrepresented in the sciences are encouraged and asked to so identify themselves in the application.  Applications must contain a one to two page letter of intent describing your interest in research, your prior experience, your career goals, and how this program will further those career goals or help you make an informed career choice, a resume, a current college transcript including courses you are taking in the spring semester, and two letters of recommendation from instructors or other faculty members who know your interest and ability in science.  These letters should be sent directly to REU, preferably by fax or e-mail.  You can also apply on-line using the ON-LINE  INFORMATION FORM.
