For the second consecutive year, a PMABS Partner Faculty Member has won the Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Gary Harmon, associate professor of biology at Elizabeth City State University, won this prestigious award in 2000. And now, in 2001, Dr. Goldie Byrd, assistant professor of biology at North Carolina Central University, has also won.
A member of the NCCU biology faculty since 1990, Dr. Byrd is dedicated to ensuring that students have a grounding in scientific basics, but also are prepared to compete in a technologically sophisticated world. She has developed new courses in molecular biology and obtained more than $7 million in grants to provide research opportunities for students and professional development opportunities for colleagues. Dr. Byrd is involved in collaborations with colleagues at her own university, other UNC institutions, and other historically minority-serving institutions. Many former students are enrolled in medical schools and doctoral programs as a result of her support and mentoring. Maintaining high expectations for everyone, including herself, she participates each year in professional development workshops and short courses to enrich her research and teaching.
The Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, which was established in April 1994, is given annually to a tenured faculty member on each of the University of North Carolina campuses for excellent and exceptional teaching over a sustained period of time. It includes a $7,500 prize.
