On-Line Internship Clearinghouse
Summer 1998 | By Scott Lowry
Students who want to spend the summer exploring the biological sciences as a career have a powerful new search tool: the National Internship Clearinghouse on the PMABS web site. The Clearinghouse provides information on 47 programs - many targeting underrepresented students - at research universities across the United States.Visitors to the web site have had access to the internship information for about a year, but PMABS Coordinator Nancy Barnes wanted to get the word out to more students. So, in January 1998, 250 posters announcing the Clearinghouse went to UNC-system universities, private HMUs in North Carolina, and the universities running the programs. The posters have directly accounted for an average of over 100 additional visits to the listings per month.
The web pages are organized by region and include application deadlines, internship dates, stipends, and program synopses. If the program has an e-mail address or a web page, a simple mouse click will connect students. To see how it works, visit the Clearinghouse at http://www.unc.edu/depts/pmabs/clearinghouse.htm
