PMABS is now accepting applications for SPIRE, an innovative post-doc training program that will combine traditional research at UNC-CH with teaching at seven of North Carolina's historically minority universities. SPIRE is funded by an award of $4,005,000 from the Minority Opportunities in Research Division at NIGMS.

SPIRE is designed to support PMABS' partner universities in their development of underrepresented students in the life sciences. Mentored by HMU biology faculty, SPIRE post-docs will bring their research and instructional training to classrooms at partner HMUs.

One of SPIRE's objectives is to make its post-docs competitive for a variety of science careers. Therefore, SPIRE training will include a range of professional development activities in addition to research and teaching. Other activities will focus on topics like time management, collaboration, communication, negotiation, innovation, paper management, and strategic planning.

Detailed information about SPIRE and the application process is available online at www.unc.edu/depts/cell/spire.html.
