The focus of the Summer Undergraduate Research in Science and Engineering Disciplines program is 10 weeks of full-time laboratory or field research under the direction of a University of Minnesota faculty mentor. Over 1,500 faculty in basic and applied sciences and engineering disciplines are potential mentors for approximately 200 undergraduates in the programs. Most programs require that students have completed two years of basic college-level course work with a GPA of 3.3 or higher.Additional activities include:
- Seminars: Regularly scheduled seminars include student and faculty research presentations and discussions.
- Workshops: Evening workshops to prepare for the Graduate Record Examination and to strengthen applications for graduate school.
- Presentations: Participants prepare professional-quality posters, research papers or oral presentations to report research findings.
- Weekend Activities: Organized visits to art and science museums, zoos, concerts, theaters, summer festivals, restaurants, and parks and group trips for canoeing, roller-blading, biking, swimming, etc.
- Housing: Housing is available in campus residence halls with ready access to computer laboratories, libraries, and recreational facilities. Some programs have additional funds for housing and travel expenses.
