Competitive stipend plus travel and housingSynopsis
The internship program provides undergraduates with ten weeks of hands-on experience in a biomedical laboratory. Interns collaborate with faculty and graduate students in ongoing research and participate in state-of-the-art research seminars. The program is designed to encourage talented students in the life sciences to consider careers in scholarly research. An internship is not a typical summer job. The hours are long, and the salary is just enough to cover the cost of living, but the intellectual challenges and rewards can be substantial. Based on the application, each intern is matched to an appropriate faculty sponsor who is a member of the Biomedical Graduate Studies Faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. The intern participates in the ongoing research of the investigator's laboratory or performs specific, supervised research project related to the goals of the laboratory.A weekly seminar series provides an overview of the breadth of contemporary biomedical science through presentations by members of the Biomedical Faculty. At the conclusion of the program each intern is asked to prepare an abstract of the work accomplished and to present a brief oral summary to fellow interns and faculty sponsors. In view of the limited time and the goals of the program, formal courses are not offered. Biomedical Graduate Studies Faculty and staff are available to meet with interns to provide advice on opportunities for graduate study and career planning. Interns also have the chance to discuss their interests informally with current graduate and medical students of Penn.
