The Mountain Lake Biological Station (University of Virginia) offers paid research opportunities for undergraduates. Our NSF-funded REU program matches qualified undergraduate students with visiting scientists for 10 weeks of advanced, independent research on a field biology project of the student's own design. Research at MLBS is focused in the areas of ecology, evolution, population biology, behavior, genetics and physiology and is heavily field based. Our station is located on a remote mountain top in southwestern Virginia and is home to a lively research, teaching and social community.Mountain Lake is also unique in its exciting, diverse, and friendly academic community, which fosters collaboration at all levels and the constant exchange of ideas with fellow students and other scientists. Students will participate in a weekly seminar about the conduct of biological research and have access to state-of-the art facilities and are granted full use of Station scientific and computer equipment. Students live together in dormitory cabins and dine in the dining hall with all other students and researchers working at the Station.
The most qualified applicants have good course experience in fields such as ecology, behavior, and evolution. A strong letter of recommendation is more important than a high GPA, and the application essay is also paramount to acceptance, as it provides researchers with insight into applicants' interests and experience.
