Synopsis
Eight undergraduate students will participate in a nine-week comprehensive research experience in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of New Mexico during the summer of 2004. The University of New Mexico provides a unique landscape and culture that will be embodied in the research focus of river and riparian restoration along the Rio Grande. Students will learn about the historical and cultural value of water, the shifting paradigm of water in the west, river and riparian restoration strategies, sustainability of water resources, and the interdisciplinary nature of water resources engineering while working on specific research projects. This opportunity is both timely and pertinent to issues relating to changes along the Middle Rio Grande Corridor.

Each student will work as part of a research team to study a component of the site such as bank stabilization or soil evaporation. The research teams will include other REU students, graduate students, and faculty. The research teams form a collaborative environment that enables mentoring and interdependent research. Simultaneously, each student is expected to learn to work independently over the course of the summer as individual contributions to the research will be expected. The project will encourage development of presentation and writing skills by requiring progress and final reports in the form of oral, visual, and written presentations that will be critiqued by the faculty.

Please see the program website for more details, or to apply online.
