The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program provides opportunities for students to carry out independent research projects under guidance of UNC faculty mentors. Students learn the latest methodologies in biological research as well as improve observation and communication skills. In addition, through meetings with guest scientists, the SURE Program seeks to enhance awareness of the diversity of research areas, especially areas of current major biological importance. The Program also conducts workshops and field trips that provide information and career guidance about scientific professions in academia, government, and the private sector. The program will also include field trips to area pharmaceutical companies, to the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences on the coast, to Durham Bulls baseball games and other social activities, to the National Institute of Health, and to the Environmental Protection Agency.Guidelines
SURE is intended for students with an earnest desire to pursue research careers in the biological or chemical sciences. Students contemplating other occupations in which familiarity with experimental science would be valuable, e.g., science teaching, are encouraged to apply. The Program is particularly interested in students having no prior research experience and students from groups underrepresented in the sciences. Preference is given to individuals completing their junior year, although students of other standing expressing persuasive plans for research or science-related careers will not be excluded from consideration.Students can request an application by calling or writing SURE or download all necessary forms from the above website.
