The Biology Department of Pomona College is an NSF-funded REU site. Our program is somewhat unusual in that it is a year-round program. Together with matching funds from Pomona College, our grant supports at least ten student research positions each semester and eight student research positions in the summer. Students can apply for positions each semester and/or summer. In our experience, in some sub-disciplines, students need more than one semester to see a project through from beginning to end. Each student works closely with a faculty member on an independent or group project that they help design. The nature of the project varies by lab and discipline. Each lab has weekly meetings in which students read and discuss journal articles, data sets, problems they need help with, and other topics of group interest. During the school year and the summer, a number of events are held that allow students to visit other labs during REU sponsored lab open houses, present and discuss their work both formally (during poster sessions and presentations) and informally (during group lunches), discuss issues related to conducting research in biology, and learn about other research opportunities, graduate programs, and alternate career paths. During the summer program, all research students and faculty also participate in weekly gatherings to foster both social and academic interactions.
Applicants should be sophomores or juniors in college, American citizens or permanent residents, and interested in pursuing a career in the life sciences. Women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply. Applications must include the application form, a college transcript, and two letters of recommendation. Applications can be submitted by e-mail or regular mail; see the REU website for more details.
