Thad L. Beyle, Thomas J. Pearsall Professor of Political Science, earned his B.A. and M.A. from Syracuse University, followed by his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1963. He was an assistant professor of political science at Denison (1963-64). After Denison, Professor Beyle worked closely with former North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford, first in the North Carolina Governor's Office under a fellowship from the National Center for Education in Politics and later as a research associate conducting a "Study of American States" at Duke University. He joined the University of North Carolina faculty in 1967. From 1974 through May 1976, he served as Director of the Center of Policy Research and Analysis of the National Governor's Conference. He was chairman of the Board of the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research from 1980-89 and served as Chairman of the Board of the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership, 1995-97. He teaches American government and politics at the national and state level, the politics of higher education, and North Carolina politics. In addition to being a contributor to a range of journals, he is co-editor of Planning and Politics (1970); The American Governor in Behavioral Perspective (1972); Politics and Policy in North Carolina (1975) with Merle Black; Being Governor (1983) with Lynn Muchmore; and editor of Gubernatorial Transitions--the 1982 Elections(1985); Gubernatorial Reelections (1986); Gubernatorial Transitions--The 1983 and 1984 Elections (1989); Governors and Hard Times (1992); and State Government (annually since 1985).
