Picture of Michael Lienesch
Michael Lienesch, Professor of Political Science, received his B.A. from the University of Illinois and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. At UNC he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in American, classical, and modern European political theory. His research focuses on American religion and politics. He is the author of New Order of the Ages, Redeeming America, and the recently released In the Beginning: Fundamentalism, the Scopes Trial, and the Making of the Antievolution Movement. He is also coeditor of Ratifying the Constitution. His articles and essays are on topics ranging from early American conspiracy theory to the contemporary religious right. Professor Lienesch has been awarded fellowships from the Earhart Foundation, the Lilly Endowment, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and has been a fellow of the National Humanities Center. In recognition of his teaching, he has won UNC's Tanner Award and been named Bowman and Gordon Gray Professor.
