Focus: The Program for Public Policy in Sports (PPPS) will focus on the State of North
Carolina during its first two years. Then, the focus will expand to the national scene as well. It
is of course recognized that state problems/issues may reflect national problems/issues and vice
versa.
Justification: The explosion of professional sports teams in North Carolina, the
construction of new sports arenas and stadiums, increased requests for funds from the state
government for sport, the emergence of NASCAR and other North Carolina sports on the international
scene, the rise of sports media, both written and electronic, the development of North Carolina as
a major sports state, the large number of diverse sport industries and the increased economic
contributions made to the state by the sports industry merit the inclusion of this topic.
