NC Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health
(NC GCPFH) Activities
Activities of the NC GCPFH for 1998 are focused on the preparation, planning and development of the
BANC (Be Active North Carolina) initiative. BANC is a comprehensive, three-year plan to increase
physical activity among all North Carolinians.
Physical activity levels in NC are among the lowest in the US: 82% of NC adults are not
sufficiently active, placing NC 49th in the nation,
and NC youth are less physically active than youth nationally. Further, physical inactivity cost
NC $1.82 billion annually for circulatory diseases and musculoskeletal claims alone, with costs
projected to rise approximately 20% by the year 2000.
The project is scheduled to kick off in Spring 1999. Fund raising is currently underway to fund
the effort. BANC will address all North Carolinians with special emphasis on older adults,
worksite, and youth.
The project will document changes in attitudes, knowledge, and physical activity habits of each
target group. For more information, call (919) 733-9615.
