Part I: Economics and Worksite Health Promotion
Chapter 2: "Positioning Health Promotion to Make an Economic Impact," by Dave Chenoweth, East Carolina University.

This is one chapter in a book of eleven chapters (Economic Impact of Worksite Health Promotion) on the topic of economic impact of worksite health promotion. The author makes the case that health care costs are increasing primarily because of strong economic factors that are not easily influenced by corporate policies and employees' actions. He follows that up with the reasoning why health promotion activities must be integrated with other cost-control strategies if they are to keep future health care costs under control. Through figures, charts, and profiles of companies making efforts to manage health care cost, he describes how health promotion activities can be included in an integrated health management framework. Their results for cost-control potential are shown in tables together with description of strategies.
Also, the most common health care claims are shown and specific health promotion strategies and programs to address these problem areas are highlighted.
A good reference source for those wishing to gain insight into worksite health promotion;, history and development, as well as some specific case studies.

Chenoweth, David. Worksite Health Promotion. Human Kinetics Publishers, 1998.

An excellent textbook for professional preparation (undergraduates or graduate students) and a useful guide for practitioners in the field. Combines reference data and useful research with "how to" practical guidelines for application of the information.

The case studies sprinkled throughout give real life worksite health promotion (WHP) experiences to learn from. The theoretical concepts in WHP, brought forth in the text, also have practical application for the reader. Of special note, the appendices give helpful materials on a) WHP resources via worldwide websites, b) sample outlines for presentations (weight management, stress management, muscle strengthening, nutrition, etc.), c) professional preparation resources and d) references and suggested readings.

Worksite Health Promotion is a classic breakthrough because of its comprehensive, full-spectrum approach coupled with its "nuts and bolts" resource style. An ideal text for anyone who wants to successfully promote the health of employees and organizations.
