Globalization of Sport

PPPS Home
Focus: The major purpose of this area of study is to note the fact that sport is an essential element in the fast moving globalization trend now occurring across the world. Sports in the globalization process can only be omitted out of ignorance. The purpose of this focus is to keep the globalization of sport current in our conversations, alive in our research and keep the University community and the state of North Carolina current and informed about the impacts and implications of and for globalization of sport.

Justification: Globalization in sports is occurring at a rapid rate. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill needs to be current on the status of this globalization process. As UNC-CH shifts from a national research university into an international one, it is essential that the academic community is aware of the promises and the pitfalls of the globalization of sport. The Program for Public Policy in Sport is ideally suited for this task because of its past history of cooperating with other institutes and centers on campus to produce and evaluate programs, because it is part of the academic curriculum at the University in sports management and exercise and sports science, and because the PPPS has been and will be able to serve the state of North Carolina through the commerce department and other allied agencies.

Proposed activities:

  1. Collect the books and articles related to globalization of sports and identify the major trends.
  2. Host a symposium on the status of globalization of sports at UNC-Chapel Hill in order to promote visibility about the topic, provide information on the topic and create a sense of awareness while building up a campus infrastructure.
  3. To work with the Study Abroad program and cooperate with other academic departments in order to educate our students about the world of sports.
  4. To publish a monograph on the globalization of sport in North Carolina noting apparel connections, manufacturing connections, sports exports such as Putt-Putt Golf in Fayetteville, and other international events.
  5. To possibly prepare a website on international sport events, businesses, industries and conferences as they apply to us.
  6. To work with other agencies to develop sports tourism areas within our state.
  7. To communicate what other schools in the UNC system are doing in the area of international sports.
  8. To continue to try to develop the on-line Olympic course.
  9. To develop a directory/bibliography of North Carolineans who have been in the Olympics.
  10. To research the contributions of North Carolina sports figures to the globalization of sports such as Michael Jordan, Mia Hamm and Marion Jones.
