Technology and Media in Sport


PPPS Home
Focus: The Program for Public Policy in Sports (PPPS) will focus its efforts on North Carolina, the United States, and then the international scene regarding issues and events related to technology and media in sports.

Justification: Media and new technologies of information transfer have had enormous impacts on sports. Instant replay, pay per view television, on-line sports, the media's presentation of sports, distance learning, and other advances in technology related to sports justify this area of service.

Proposed activities:

  1. Establish and teach an on-line distance learning course on the Olympics based upon the Olympics course currently taught at UNC-CH.
    Status: A proposal for joint sponsorship of this course has been sent to the USOC.
  2. Compile a series of seminars on technology in sport.
    Status: In planning stage
  3. Evaluate and report on observations regarding role models and gender protrayals on television.
    Status: In progress
  4. Examine the uses of technology in sport and summarize in written form.
    Status: In progress. Note: PPPS Director (Dr. Ronald Hyatt) has made six international presentations in the last five years on technology and sports.
