Douglas Lee Lauen is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy at UNC Chapel Hill who specializes in educational policy, research methods, and urban school reform. Doug recently completed his Ph.D. at University of Chicago in Sociology. While pursuing his degree, Doug has worked as a researcher for the Data Research and Development Center and at the Consortium on Chicago School Research, where he co-authored a report on educational technology in Chicago Public Schools. His doctoral dissertation examined the causes and consequences of school choice in Chicago. Before enrolling in a Ph.D. program, he worked at MPR Associates, Inc. a consulting firm based in Berkeley, CA that specializes in management, planning and research for elementary, secondary and postsecondary education. While at MPR, he designed and taught a workshop on how to use Microsoft Excel for Data Analysis for teachers and administrators. This course was designed to complement MPR's workshops on how to use data for program improvement purposes. He came to MPR after receiving a masters degree in public policy studies from the University of Chicago in 1997.
