Amber Peterman
(entered 2004) comes from Washington State. She received her BA
in Economics with an Asian Studies minor from the University of
California at San Diego. She has worked, traveled and volunteered
in nearly two-dozen countries over the last few years, including
South Africa, Guatemala, Ghana, India, Brazil, Vietnam, Spain, and
Italy. She is especially interested in women's empowerment as issues
of demography, reproductive health, and education as these are reflected
within the strength of maternal and familial bonds. Ambers' dreams
of Africa are what brought her to the department of public policy
where she will gain the framework for understanding the workings
of the institutions that impact social welfare and at the same time
give her the freedom to pursue specific focus concerning poverty.
She hopes to conduct a portion of her research overseas, preferably
in Africa. Amber has been awarded the Graduate School Scholars for
Tomorrow Fellowship in the area of Global Studies.
