Course Description:

This course is concerned with political and economic developments in Southern Africa in the 20th Century. It has, as one of its central themes, the disintegration of the apartheid system in South Africa and its consequences for the political economy of the region. A major portion of the course will be devoted to the problems of democratic development and state building in the major countries of the region (Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe). The last portion of the course will be devoted to the prospects of regional (economic) integration in light of post-apartheid economic.
