Community Inclusion Strategies

  

Develop a daily routine that involves contact with nondisabled people in their community

 

Get to know the neighbors

  

Meet other people who share similar interests

 

Become familiar with local businesses (i.e. bank, post office, grocery store, coffee shops, bakery, church, beauty shop, etc.)

 

Teach the person how to use a telephone, a taxicab, the city bus, etc. to increase community living skills

 

Teach smart consumer budgeting and purchasing skills to increase independent shopping and individual choice

 

Get on the mailing list of different community agencies to receive program schedules and information

 

Promote on-going participation in classes, activities and programs at local public recreation facilities (YWCA, YMCA, Parks/Recreation Dept.)

 

Become a member of civic and other local organizations, clubs, etc

 

 Role-Model acceptable social behavior when in the community

(i.e. greeting people, shaking hands, smiling, saying hello, good-bye, and thank-you)
