Department Tidbits

Owen Daniels and Marian Kaslovsky, both first year therapeutic recreation graduate students, have been selected as recipients of the Lauth Scholarship for 1999-2000.

RECR’s five faculty members attended and presented their research at NRPA in Nashville, TN in October. In addition, graduate students Mike Thonnerieux, Gilbert Tan, Andrew McCune and Heather Hicks attended. Also representing the department were undergraduates Laura Pendergrass, Catherine Swanson and Jenny Huggins.

Kelly Daughtry (BA 99) was the winner of a UNC sweatshirt compliments of the department. A survey was sent out to 1998-99 RECR grads to get feedback on how our program prepared them for their careers in the field of recreation. A drawing was held for the sweatshirt after approximately 23 out of 43 responses were returned.

The Recreation Society, under the leadership of Laura Pendergrass, has been active. Members passed around a milk jug in RECR classes and raised over $150 for flood victims in eastern NC. The Rec Society matched this amount and sent a check for $300 to the Recreation Dept. at East Carolina to help needy students. Rec Club also organized a group of students and faculty to travel to flood-damaged areas in NC to help with the cleanup.
