The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures offers students at Chapel Hill the opportunity to study a variety of languages and the cultural achievements of the people who speak them. In our BA program, students acquire basic and advanced skills by studying language, literature, and culture. At the MA and PhD levels, we combine advanced course work in literature and culture with carefully supervised pre-professional training, such as classroom teaching and experience abroad, in order to prepare professionals who can transmit and advance linguistic, literary and cultural knowledge. The faculty of the Department are equally dedicated to the undergraduate and graduate components of the program, and each member regularly teaches courses at both levels. The faculty's commitment to research is intimately connected with and nourished by its work in the classroom, thus affirming the ideals set forth in the University's recent Mission statement, which identifies the faculty as a body "whose teaching is transformed by discovery."

The College of Arts and Sciences supports the University's core values encouraging diversity and equal educational and employment opportunities throughout the University community. These values are articulated in the University's non-discrimination policy and by the office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.
