Some countries in Eastern Europe such as Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic are now part of the European Union (EU) and are required to bring their air pollution levels within EU standards. A brief comparison will be made of EU and US EPA ambient air quality standards, as well as a comparison of air pollution levels from select US and Eastern European cities. In addition we will discuss how our preliminary research findings may impact air pollution standards and potentially help the scientific community better understand the health effects of air pollution. Our research uses in vitro cell exposure methods on respiratory epithelial cells to investigate urban air pollution and its potential respiratory health effects.
