This presentation will discuss the issues of moral panics on youth cultures in contemporary Croatian society. Theoretical framework will include works of Stanley Cohen, Stuart Hall as well as work of Goode and Ben-Yehuda. Certain emphasis will be on contextual specifications of Croatian culture and Croatian society with more space devoted to the role of the media in transformation or transitional societies. Units of analyses will be newspaper articles in most influential Croatian newspapers with a closer look on what kind of discourse is involved when youth culture and deviancy is discussed. It will also be discussed how moral panics is now also maintained by the role of experts that help to further amplify the fears and expectations of society. In order to grasp as much as it is possible from youth cultures in contemporary Croatian society, examples used will vary from music, television and videogames.
