Yale Alumni Russian Chorus

Time: Oct. 1 (Saturday), 8 pm

Location: Duke Chapel

On Saturday, October 1, Duke will host a one-of-a-kind choral concert, the Yale Alumni Russian Chorus, which celebrated its 50th anniversary just last year. Please join us for an extraordinary rendition of Russian sacred and secular music, and for the truly distinctive sound and spirit of this music sung by a 100-voice chorus of mature voices.

Over 100 singers from around the world perform sacred and secular songs under the direction of Founding Conductor Denis Mickiewicz (currently Research Scholar in Slavic and East European Studies at Duke). The Yale Russian Chorus was founded at Yale in 1953 during the height of the Cold War; throughout its 50-year history the Chorus has toured internationally, serenaded government leaders, brought traditional Russian music back to ordinary Russians during the years when it was suppressed by the authorities, and recorded extensively. Chorus alumni include leaders in various fields from academia and the clergy to business, law, science and government service. They share a unique bond of comradeship in music, regularly traveling great distances to participate in these alumni concerts. Their repertoire includes hauntingly lyrical selections, reflecting centuries of Slavic choral tradition, as well as rousing Cossack songs. From Duke, they will travel to Washington, DC to perform in our nation's capital.
