International Scholar Brown Bag Lunch Series: Reflections and Accounts From the Professional Life Of an Economist From Kazakhstan

This new "brown bag" lunch series is intended to be an informal discussion highlighting the work of one of the many international scholars at Duke University. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch and eat while the featured scholar talks about her professional life at home and what she is currently working on in the United States. Participants are also strongly encouraged to come with questions. International House will provide drinks and a small dessert for anyone who attends.

Ai-Gul has been working in Economics for 30 years since graduating from Moscow Agriculture Academy in 1977. Ten years later she received the equivalent of a PhD from the same institution. Before coming to Duke as a Fulbright Scholar, she held various positions as an Research Analyst and Special Economic Advisor for the government of Kazakhstan. Her primary areas of interest have included pension reform, social security analysis, and health care. Among other honors, in 2002 she received a special medal for service upon the 10th anniversary of the independence of Kazakhstan. Aside from her professional life, Ai-Gul is an engaging personality with creative insight on her many cross-cultural experiences. She is interested in literature as well as film. She is also a fine chef of Kazakh cuisine.
