Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Grants for Graduate Students

The following Area Studies Programs at UNC-CH have FLAS awards:

  • The Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies
  • The Center for European Studies
  • The Institute of Latin American Studies
  • South Asian Studies
  • The Center for Global Initiatives (formerly the University Center for International Studies)

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are designed to provide support and funding to graduate students studying the languages and cultures of specific foreign countries, including those of Eastern Europe. An annual competition is held to determine the recipients for both summer and year-long grants. FLAS fellowships cover tuition at UNC-CH/Duke, plus a stipend. Stipends are $15,000 for an academic-year award and $2,500 for summer. Travel awards of up to $1,000 are available only in connection with a summer FLAS fellowship to cover travel to another institution if necessary.

In addition to the application form (pdf) (doc), applicants must submit a language evaluation form (pdf) completed by a faculty member, academic transcripts, and a statement describing how the proposed language study fits in with their overall course of study, career goals, and research project.

Eligibility is limited to graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Only academic year awards may be used for research abroad and only in the event the research cannot be done effectively in the U.S. Summer awards are for intensive language training only. Overseas awards are for advanced and intermediate levels. Priority will be given to the non-Russian languages of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union and higher levels of training, as well as the distribution of awards among a diverse range of disciplines.

This is a wonderful opportunity for language study and should not be missed. All graduate students studying Russian or an East European language are encouraged to apply.
