The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship was established in 1987 to provide college graduates with the opportunity to gain a Washington perspective on key issues of peace and security. Twice yearly, the Fellowship's Board of Directors selects a small group of outstanding individuals to spend six months in Washington. Supported by a monthly stipend, the Fellows serve as full-time project assistants at the participating organization of their choice.

Federal Bureau of Investigation National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) Internship

Twice a year, four exceptional college students from undergraduate or graduate programs are selected to participate in a full-time, 14-week unpaid internship program at the FBI's National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC), located near the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia. The NCAVC provides investigative support to law enforcement agencies around the world in crimes such as serial or single homicide, child abduction or exploitation, bombing, arson, threats, serial rape, or extortion. The program offers the student an opportunity to view the FBI from the inside and to contribute significantly to research into violent crime. Internships start the first week in September (after Labor Day) or the second week in January and last a minimum of 14 weeks.

The program is intended to support young specialists in the fields of business and economics, education reform, environmental and conservation policy, international relations, journalism, law, public administration, public health and urban planning. Fellows will go to a country in the region to deepen their understanding of current reforms and national development, and become familiar with scholarly resources which they will use in future projects. Applicants will be expected to propose feasible research, study or internship plans for the period of the fellowship and indicate a desired institutional affiliation in the host country.

United Nations Internship Program

The objective of the internship program is threefold: (1) to provide a framework by which graduate and post-graduate students from diverse academic backgrounds may be assigned to United Nations offices where their educational experience can be enhanced through practical work assignments; (2) to expose them to the work of the United Nations; and (3) to provide UN offices with the assistance of highly qualified students specialized in various professional fields. This internship program is for the United Nations Secretariat New York only.

United States Department of State Internships

The Department is looking for students with a broad range of majors, such as Business or Public Administration, Social Work, Economics, Information Management, Journalism, and the Biological and Physical and Engineering Sciences, as well as those majors more traditionally identified with international affairs. Intern duties and responsibilities may vary according to post or office of assignment. Internships are excellent preparation for future careers in international affairs, both for the Civil Service and the Foreign Service. Interns usually serve for one semester or quarter during the academic year, or for a minimum of 10 weeks during the summer; they are expected to work a 40-hour week.

The majority of all internships are unpaid.

The Woodrow Wilson Center provides its visiting scholars with assistance in the form of interns. Interns support the scholar's work in a number of ways, largely through substantive research.
