Background on the Diversity Education Team (DET):
Founded in 2007, the mission of the UNC-Chapel Hill Diversity Education Team (DET)is to develop diversity awareness in student, faculty and staff communities, and promote safe and productive dialogue around issues of diversity and inclusion through education and training. The DET was formed as a result of data gathered in the 2005 Diversity Assessment which suggested that there were not sufficient opportunities for faculty, staff and students to receive relevant and effective diversity education. The DET is composed of faculty, staff and graduate students who have completed a three day diversity education training program. A number of members also have additional professional expertise in diversity and multicultural issues.
What does the Diversity Education Team offer?
Departments, units and student organizations are invited to request:
- partnerships in the planning of conference, symposia or panel discussions on diversity
- consultation on diversity event/celebration planning
- diversity education sessions from 90 minutes to two hours depending on the topic and the audience
The DET works closely with university departments, units and organizations to develop relevant training programs. Programs are not limited to one training model or method, but will include a basic curriculum made up of activities which can be adapted to fit the needs of the group requesting diversity education training. We will offer Diversity 101 for schools, units and groups that have not had any diversity education before. There will also be modules that go more in-depth for specific issues such as cross-cultural communication, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender issues, etc. So far, the DET has offered diversity training to campus Residence Advisors/ Department of Housing and Residential Education. DET members also teach the following HR classes: "Diversity for Employees" and "Diversity for Supervisors".
There is no cost for the facilitators and the delivery of the education session but the requesting agent are asked to provide copies of materials to be distributed and securing a program venue. Please submit all training requests at least thirty days prior to the event to allow the curriculum to be adapted to the audience appropriately. Requests will receive a reply with 5 working days. A limited number of DET programs will be offered each semester. Please submit your requests early in the semester for full consideration.
What topics do Diversity Education Team program address?
The offerings by the DET will focus on race and ethnicity. Future topics for emphasis include sexual orientation, religion, gender and economic disparities. You are welcome to suggest topics for future programs.
