Internships

You can earn credit for an internship in two ways:

  1. Through an academic unit at Carolina. If you wish to fulfill your experiential education (EE) Connections requirement by completing an internship, you must register for a course offered by an academic unit at Carolina. Many academic departments and curricula offer internship courses, usually for their majors. If you are interested in this option, be sure to plan ahead by checking with the relevant unit about available opportunities, deadlines, and the academic requirements for holding an internship. See the Internship Reference Guide below for a partial-list of academic units offering internship credit.
  2. Through University Career Services. You may wish to pursue an internship to learn about career opportunities or to make yourself more attractive to potential employers. You may also want to complete an internship in a field that is not closely related to a department/curriculum at UNC-Chapel Hill, or perhaps a prospective employer requires you to receive college credit in order to hold the internship. In these situations, you can earn credit through SPCL 500, a one-credit, Pass/Fail course that does not fulfill the experiential education (EE) Connections requirement or count towards your hours for graduation. For instructions on submitting a SPCL 500 application, which must be done before beginning the internship, please visit the University Career Services' website, or meet with a Career Services advisor.
