Forms/Instructions: Waiver Petitions
Any student petitioning for a substitution/waiver of a General Education requirement at UNC must apply in writing to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Curricula, College of Arts & Sciences. All applications must be typed or word-processed and must provide the following information/materials:
- Personal Information:
- Student’s Name
- PID Number
- College: GC or A&S or Specific Professional School
- Cumulative Grade Point Average
- Local Mailing Address
- Telephone Number
- E-mail Address
- A clear and concise statement outlining the substitution or waiver requested.*
- A thorough justification for the substitution or waiver requested and appropriate evidentiary materials supporting the student’s request. That might include a photocopy of the catalogue course description, syllabus, exams, papers, etc. All requests must include a copy of the course syllabus.
- Student’s signature, with date of signing.
The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Curricula normally will make a recommendation regarding a waiver request within 15 working days.

*If you have a question regarding transfer credit, i.e. you believe you should receive credit for a different course, bring your supporting materials to the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the department in which the course is taught.
