Forms/Instructions: Petitions

First-year students, sophomores, and juniors are expected to plan ahead and finish their requirements without substitutions. Any student petitioning to substitute a course to meet a General Education requirement at UNC-CH must apply in writing to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Curricula; petitions sent by email cannot be reviewed. Petitions can only request that a course not currently meeting some General Education requirement be allowed to do so. Requests to substitute credits gained By Examination (BE credits) or through life experiences that do not carry academic credit cannot be honored. All applications must be typed or word-processed and must include the following information and supporting materials:

The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Curricula normally will make a recommendation regarding a petition within 15 working days and will notify students by mail (or email if the student is out of the country).

PETITIONS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO:

Erika Lindemann, Interim Associate Dean
Office of Undergraduate Curricula
College of Arts and Sciences
CB# 3504, 3018 Steele Building
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3504

PLEASE NOTE: If you have questions about transfer credit, or believe that you should receive credit for a different course, bring your supporting materials to the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the department in which the course is taught.
