9th Annual Photography Competition

The Center for Global Initiatives is pleased to announce our call for entries to the 9th Annual International Photography Competition held each year to celebrate International Education Week (November 17-21). This is an amateur photography competition that is open to all students, faculty, alumni and staff of UNC-Chapel Hill.

Requirements: The main requirement is that the photograph(s) represents an international or cross-cultural experience. Photographs must be submitted in a digital format (i.e.-35mm prints should be scanned and sent as digital files). Photographs from all types of cameras (35 mm, digital, instant) will be accepted. We prefer submissions at 300 dpi in either jpg or tiff format but lower resolutions will be accepted (the higher the resolution the better the print!). When in doubt send the original source file, unaltered. Photographs should be submitted via email to bkutchma@email.unc.edu in jpg or tif format. You may submit up to 3 photographs. An online Entry Form must also be completed and submitted. Photographs will be accepted from any time period (ie-photos do not need to have been taken within the past year!).

Judging Criteria: Entries will be judged on ability to represent a cross-cultural/international experience and on artistic merit. A brief description/essay must accompany each image describing the photo and or the circumstances that brought you to the location of the photo. This description will also be considered in the judging process. More information is evailable via the online entry form.

Entry Period: June 23, 2008 through Friday, September 26, 2008

Entries must be the original work of the entrant, and must be created exclusively by the entrant.

How to Enter:

1. Complete and submit the online Entry Form. (you may submit up to three photos via one entry form).

2. Send your photographs via email to Beth-Ann Kutchma at bkutchma@email.unc.edu. Name each image file with your last name and partial title of the image. (ex. kutchma-kenyalandscape1.jpg, kutchma-smilinggirl.tiff)

Exhibits: Winners will be notified at a reception held during International Education Week (November 17-21, 2008). Winning entries may also be featured in our annual calendar published by the Center. Qualifying entries may be featured in various university publications and websites. You can view the 2006-2007 winners and 2007-2008 winners via our online gallery. The Center is also planning a publication highlighting the stories and photos collected over the past five-ten years of this program.
