Gerald Bolas, Ph.D.
Gerald Bolas, Ph.D.

Director of the Ackland Art Museum and Adjunct Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences' Art Department, Gerald Bolas was formerly director of the Portland Art Museum in Oregon and director of the Washington University Gallery of Art in St. Louis.

He leads the Ackland's efforts to collect, preserve, and display great works of art, create knowledge, nurture the intellectual climate on campus, support the K-12 curricular community statewide, and welcome onto Carolina's historic campus visitors from across the state and around the world. Currently he is working toward doubling the size of the Ackland and making its collection of 15,000 objects more widely accessible through traveling exhibitions, educational programs, and emerging technologies.

"We believe in the power of art to effect transformations great and small in our lives every day.”

"The new and expanded Ackland Art Museum will be a living organism nourished by the community it enriches. It will inspire learning and advance our journey of discovery and transformation through art.”

Gerald Bolas, Ackland Art Museum
