John Buse, M.D.
John Buse, M.D.

Since his recruitment as director of the Diabetes Care Center in 1994, Dr. Buse has brought UNC-Chapel Hill to the forefront of diabetes management and has been a national leader in developing more effective treatments. He discusses the failure of the health care system to deal with the disease and the barriers and opportunities that now exist for treatment and prevention of diabetes and its complications.

"Diabetes is under-diagnosed, under-treated and under-appreciated as a cause of death and disability. Despite the fact that almost 20 percent of all health care dollars are spent on the management of people with diabetes, the diabetes epidemic and its associated pain and suffering grow and grow. It does not have to be that way.”

"Patients all too often do not fully benefit from what science has taught us. As the lay public becomes more broadly aware of issues of health, wellness and the principles of self-care, they will push the system towards more rapid assimilation of new understanding.”

John Buse, Diabetes Care Center
