Catherine Edwards, Ph.D. Candidate
An alumna of UNC-Chapel Hill (class of 1999) and now a doctoral candidate in Marine Sciences, Royster Fellow Catherine Edwards' research focuses on "internal waves" similar to familiar ocean surface waves. While surface waves ride the interface between water and air, internal waves travel the underwater boundary between hot and cold seawater, and have important consequences for circulation and marine life.
Ms. Edwards is looking at internal waves off the coast of Savannah, and is planning to analyze their influence on ocean currents and nutrient exchange.
Ms. Edwards was honored by the Naval Research Laboratory for achievements she attained while working there (previous to coming to Carolina); she and her co-workers are applying for a patent on the software and analysis they developed during her time there.
