Jonathan Howes, M.R.P., M.P.A.
Professor Howes returned to the University in 1997 to serve as Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Community Affairs. As the longtime director of the Center for Urban and Regional Studies and the former mayor of Chapel Hill, he is well qualified to lead the University's efforts to improve its performing arts facilities and develop the large Horace Williams tract.
From 1993-1997, he served in Governor Hunt's cabinet as Secretary of the Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources. In that capacity, he lead the state's efforts to improve its parks, launched a comprehensive program of environmental education, and secured appropriations to build a landmark building for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and expand the state's aquaria on the coast.
