Seth Reice, Ph.D.
Dr. Reice's research is on natural and man-made disturbances to ecosystems, particularly streams. He is interested in how disturbances impact biodiversity for both good and ill. His new book, The Silver Lining, explains how fires and floods, hurricanes and tornadoes actually benefit natural ecosystems and consequently benefit all of us.
Natural disasters often enhance biodiversity to the health of the ecosystem and boost the services that they provide to humanity. Dr. Reice has also worked on the role of public policy and environmental regulations in controlling the sedimentation damage to streams caused by construction projects. He is interested in sustainable development, whereby we can improve the lives of people without damaging or compromising our environment. He is working on the role of development and land use in watersheds in North Carolina, and how that impacts the structure and function of stream communities. Dr. Reice is an Associate Professor of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill. Born in New York City, he attended the University of Rochester, and got his Ph.D in Zoology from Michigan State University. He has studied and worked abroad in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, England, and Israel.
