Fred Spielman, M.D.
Dr. Spielman is a professor of anesthesiology who has a passion for art. His research has identified art that illustrates ancient anesthetic techniques as well as folklore and myths about drugs and disease states pertaining to pain and its alleviation. Some of the art is over 500 years old, while some was completed as recently as the 1990s.
Several of the artists are famous and others are not even professional. Dr. Spielman has been awarded two travel grants to study at the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine in London. He has presented his talk at the Duke University Museum, the National Institutes of Health, and the Chicago Society for the History of Medicine.
