 Chuck Stone, M.A.
This Walter Spearman professor of journalism and mass communication has been a White House correspondent, a commentator on the Today Show, the editor of three black newspapers, a congressional aide, a prison negotiator, and has authored three books. He has been twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.
His popular course on censorship always has a waiting list, which may explain his five excellence in teaching awards. He was the 2002 recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Award, UNC's highest award for a faculty member.

"This ex-Connecticut Yankee grew up reciting the required catechism for all New Englanders: 'Here's to dear old Boston, land of the bean and the cod, where Cabots speak only to Lodges and Loges speak only to God.' After moving to Carolina, this born-again Tar Heel quickly changed regional loyalties: 'Here's to dear ol' Dean Smith, a man beyond reproach. When heaven gets its first basketball team, Dean Smith will be the first coach.
