What can the Writing Center do for degree-seeking undergraduate students?
- The Writing Center offer fifty-minute, one-on-one tutorials to undergraduate students. Undergraduates may use our face-to-face or Online Tutor services twice per week.
- Undergraduates are also welcome to use our extensive collection of online writing handouts and to attend any workshops we offer.
- Undergraduate organizations can request workshops if they can guarantee that at least ten students will attend.
- Students may also request Writing Center support for their own writing groups.
What can the Writing Center do for graduate students in Arts and Sciences and for all faculty?
- Services to graduate students in Arts and Sciences and faculty are basically the same as those offered to undergraduates. Graduate students and faculty may schedule only one appointment or Online Tutor session per week.
- Instructors may request workshops for their courses or consult with Writing Center staff about designing writing assignments, using writing exercises in class, and other matters related to writing instruction.
What can the Writing Center do for graduate students in Nursing, Education, Social Work, Public Health, Medicine, Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Government, Information and Library Science, Allied Health, Pharmacy, Business, Journalism, and Law?
- Graduate students in programs outside the College of Arts and Sciences may schedule up to one face-to-face tutoring appointment per week. The appointment must be scheduled on a same-day basis. For example, a student who wants to come in on Wednesday will need to look on Wednesday morning to see if there are any openings available. If not, the student can continue checking online throughout the day to see whether any openings appear.
- Graduate students can also use the Online Tutor; we will respond to their submissions as our schedule permits. The "weather symbol" in the Online Tutor system indicates how busy we are.
- International students and scholars in the professional schools may register for our ELAC workshops and writing groups.
- All graduate students, faculty, and staff may register for the Writing Center's campuswide writing workshops.
- Everyone is welcome to use the Writing Center's online instructional handouts, many of which are relevant to graduate student, faculty, and staff concerns.
- Students, faculty, and staff may also request Writing Center support for their own writing groups.
- Business and Law have their own writing and communication centers for students enrolled in their programs.
What about other groups of writers affiliated with UNC?
- UNC employees/staff members and post-docs can schedule up to one appointment per week, on a same-day basis.
- Continuing Studies non-degree-seeking students (classifed as SPU or SPG) may not schedule appointments, but may be seen as walk-ins, if openings are available.
- Visiting scholars are classified differently by different academic departments; they should contact the Writing Center for information about whether they are eligible for tutoring.
- Alumni, community members, family members of students and staff, and others who do not have a current ONYEN are not eligible for tutoring.
Why are different services available to different groups of writers?
The Writing Center is located in the Office of Undergraduate Education in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is funded directly by the College, rather than by student fees. Its first priority is service to undergraduate students; its second priority is service to the College. The Writing Center's long-term goal is to serve the entire university and engage in community outreach.
The Writing Center doesn't provide what I need. What other services or resources are available to writers on our campus?
