Some Student Evaluations of the Writing Center, 2005

I am so incredibly grateful for the writing center. Recently a friend commented on how much I come to the WC and said, "You must find it to be helpful." I told her, "It's changed my life." So I want to thank the Writing Center for being a part of transforming my experience of learning through growing as a writer. Looking back over my elementary, secondary, college, and previous graduate studies, the Writing Center has been the most influential part of my learning experience. My only regret is that I could not turn to the Writing Center when I was 8 years old!

My tutor was very honest and also was open to my own thoughts. I felt very comfortable making suggestions or asking questions about anything that concerned me.

The tutor kept asking me questions about the points I was trying to make in my paper. The questions made me realize that I did have good points and my paper had potential. The questions also made me feel better about the clarity and persuasiveness of my paper. I expected the tutor to actually edit my paper; instead, she gave me the confidence I needed to fix it on my own.

My confidence to write seems to be alive again. The ideas are still flooding my brain, right now.

My tutor was really helpful, spoke to me as a peer, and served as an encouraging sounding board for my ideas, which was exactly what I was looking for.

I'm not a confident writer, and it's always nice to have someone to help you better understand the writing prompt. It's also comforting to have someone read over what you have to see if your writing makes sense to anyone else other than yourself.

Just being able to have someone to talk out my problems with [was the most helpful thing about my session]. I also received a lot of encouragement, and it built up my self-esteem, making me recognize some of the good points in my writing

Having someone else read the first pages [of my paper] was helpful. I have read them so many times that they make sense to me, but for someone else to say that they were not following my argument helped met to realize that I need to do some re-working in order to state my arguments more clearly.

The most helpful aspect [of my session] was that [it] was one on one and did not talk about "how to write," but rather how to use my strengths to be a successful writer.

I like the fact that the student is encouraged to find their own answers.

At first I was doubtful that one session would be able to help with my writing long term rather than just with this paper, but the strategy was effective. My tutor truly helped me evaluate my writing and taught me manageable steps to grow as a writer.

My tutor helped me to go beyond the surface of the prompt and and produce a compelling argument.

The questions that my tutor has of my writing help me become sharper and better- he's done a GREAT job with me so far, and I only wish that I began to work with him, oh, say, 5 years ago....

My tutor REALLY understood where I was coming from. She even gave examples of how she went through the same difficulties and what she did to work through them. I appreciate that she was so empathetic and that she gave me very specific ideas about how to work this week and toward the future.

Helping with my thesis [was the best thing my tutor did for me]. It's a big change from high-school writing, and she helped me understand it and explained it in a simple way.

I LOVE the writing center and see it as a tool for developing my writing skills while here working on a master's degree. I have learned much more in the space of a few months than all my years in English classes in high school and the required ones in college. A love of writing is now blooming.

I am very happy to have someplace to turn to in my hour of need.

The Writing Center is awesome for everyone and anyone!
