ESL Resources

Welcome to the ESL Resources page. The links below will direct you to further information for specific groups, but we encourage you to read each of the pages and share them with others.

ESL Students

The ESL student resources page has links to our most important handouts for writing in the American university and for a few particularly challenging grammatical structures. It includes links to further resources for your studies at UNC and to other English language resources.

Faculty and Teaching Assistants

The tips on teaching ESL students page explains some of the challenges students face as they pursue advanced study in a second language. It provides strategies for teaching and responding to their writing, along with links to other interesting and useful information.

Writing Center Tutors

The ten tips for ESL tutorials provides a brief overview of effective tutoring strategies—many of which are comfortingly similar to strategies used with native English writers.

Read the tips, and then move on to "just check my grammar" for a wealth of strategies for addressing this common (and legitimate) request in ways that respect the principles of the writing center and of second language acquisition.
