Writing Center Services
In addition to individual writing conferences, the Writing Center offers other services to the University community. Call 962-7710 or stop by the Writing Center for further information about these services
Grammar Hotline
Need a quick writing question answered? Contact the Grammar Hotline. If you have a focused question about one aspect of your paper --usually a question about a sentence, word, phrase, or punctuation mark--you may not need an appointment at the Writing Center. Just call our Grammar Hotline at 962-7710. Someone may be able to help solve your writing problem over the phone.
Help For Hire
We recognize that sometimes the Writing Center's services do not fit your needs. If you are looking for an editor, proofreader, tutor for your child, or typist, you may want to search the Help for Hire page to see a list of local people who are interested in doing this work for a fee. The people listed here are not endorsed by the Writing Center nor by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; we are not responsible for the services they provide or for any aspect of their interactions with you. We simply provide web space for interested individuals to advertise their availability. We cannot recommend a particular editor or tutor for your situation. By reading their qualifications, checking their references, and emailing/talking with them, you can make an informed choice on your own. We've organized those listed into specialty areas, and they list their own fees and qualifications on the board. Please recognize that those listed on the Help For Hire board are not necessarily endorsed by the Writing Center nor the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Writing Center provides web space for interested individuals to advertise their availability without assessing their qualifications. We are not recommending nor endorsing any one of them over another. By reading their qualifications, checking their references, and emailing/talking with them, you can make an informed choice on your own.
Writing Groups
The Writing Center coordinates and provides support for writing groups. If you would like to participate in a writing group, contact the Writing Center with your current needs and interests.
Resource Library
The Writing Center houses a growing library of books about writing for students, teachers, and administrators. Stop by to find reference materials, style manuals, handbooks, and writing guides.
Classroom Support
The Director consults with those who want to learn more about using writing assignments in courses. Call 962-7710 or email Dr. Kimberly Abels, kabels@email.unc.edu, to discuss your needs or possible designs for in-class workshops on special topics.
