As we celebrate 30 years of tremendous growth and expansion, we want to thank our alumni, patrons, and friends of the Curriculum in Women’s Studies who have generously supported undergraduate students, public lectures, innovative teaching, and faculty research and development. Below are just a few of the achievements made possible by this support.
We began thirty years ago as a small program with no permanent faculty and are now a vibrant curriculum with a broadly interdisciplinary faculty of seven specializing in fields including History, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, Media Studies, Literature and Literary Theory. And we have been able to ensure faculty diversity through our participation in the College of Arts and Sciences Minority Post-doctoral Program.
Our highly published faculty have channeled their research into a number of new and innovative courses such as Women in Science, Women’s Spirituality Across Cultures, The International Politics of Sexual and Reproductive Health, and Women and Creativity.
The distinctive Women and Science Program at UNC-Chapel Hill, established in 1993, is now housed in Women’s Studies and directed by Dr. Silvia Tomaskova. The program’s mandate is to work with the science departments on the UNC campus to attract and retain more women and minority students and faculty in the sciences and mathematics.
In the past, generous donor gifts established the Mary Turner Lane Award for Undergraduate Research, the Druscilla French Distinguished Professor of Women’s Studies, and have provided funds for faculty professional development.
Thanks to your generous support Women’s Studies at Carolina has grown and flourished. Please help us meet the challenge of maintaining our first-rate program committed to the study of women and gender in the United States and around the globe.
Your gift may go toward supporting undergraduate research and enhancing our educational mission, faculty travel to archives, libraries, and museums, or to retaining and recruiting the world-class faculty for which UNC is renowned.
