Diversity Education Workshops for UNC Faculty, Staff and Students

Diversity and Leadership: (90 min) This workshop is targeted towards student groups and teams. The workshop focuses on how leadership builds team culture, strengths of having a diverse team and essentials for inclusive excellence in groups. The workshop also provides participants with resources to address barriers, build relationships and have a transformational learning experience.
Diversity in the Classroom: (2 hours) This workshop is targeted towards emerging educators who are working in a classroom setting. The workshop addresses recognizing diversity, understanding culture and its influence on classroom dynamics and advancing discourse around diversity issues within a classroom. The workshop also provides resources for educators and students to engage in diversity opportunities within and outside the classroom.
Diversity and Gender: (2 hours) This workshop is targeted towards groups and units who wish to address gender and its influence within their work setting on culture, leadership styles and team dynamics. The workshop creates space for facilitated conversations around inclusive practices, advancing gender equity and creating a safe and supportive climate that celebrates achievement, experiences and diversity.
Diversity in the Workplace: (2 hours)
This workshop is targeted towards units and groups who wish to understand policies and procedures related to diversity within the UNC system. The workshop provides information on university policies and statistics related to gender and minority presence in the campus student body and workforce. the workshop also addresses diversity and its intersections, influence on identity and work performance, climate and overall team dynamics.
Diversity in Hiring: (2 hours) This workshop is targeted towards units and groups looking to recruit a more diverse workforce. The workshop will explore national trends, peer institution practices, understanding broader issues of incorporating inclusive language, encouraging open communication and ways to address barriers such as intolerance, sexism, homophobia and racism in all its forms. The workshop discussions aim to create a culture that values diversity amongst its employees, increases productivity and satisfaction. The workshop also equips participants with tactics and resources to build an inclusive hiring experience for both the hiring committee and the prospective employees.
Negotiating for Equity: (90 min)
Today, women who work full-time earn, on average, 77 cents for every dollar that men earn. In comparison, African American women earn 67 cents on the dollar, and Hispanic women earn about 58 cents. While the issues associated with the gender wage gap are complex, negotiation skills are identified as one key component to reducing the pay gap between men and women.This workshop is targeted towards undergraduate and graduating seniors to empower and provide them with the tools to negotiate salaries and benefits as they approach the job market. Workshop participants participate in role-play exercises to gain concrete negotiation skills, learn about the personal consequences of the gender wage gap, learn how to benchmark reasonable salaries and benefits, and gain insight into their ―bottom line and how to budget.
