1. Why are unit reports required as part of the diversity plan?

To assure that Carolina is on the path to excellence in diversity, it is essential to review Carolina's diversity achievements in light of benchmarks that are meaningful to the specific context of schools and other units' responsibilities. Annual unit reports will provide context and evidence for assessing Carolina's progress towards meeting the five diversity goals.

2. Which units are expected to submit a report?

View www.unc.edu/diversity/diversityplan/units.html for a list of units expected to submit diversity plan reports.

3. What is the deadline for report submission?

An initial baseline report will be due by October 18,2006. Please submit this report to Dr. Cookie Newsom, via email. The first annual diversity plan report will be submitted as part of the budget and planning process in Spring 2007.

4. What is the difference between the baseline report due in Fall 2006 and the annual report due in Spring 2007?

The baseline report is intended to provide a brief description of current or recent programs/ initiatives that support one or more of the five university diversity goals. If your unit submitted a report to the Chancellor's Task Force on Diversity (2005), you may wish to revise that report to describe your unit's most recent efforts. The annual diversity plan report is intended to reflect each unit's internal diversity planning and should address the following questions:

  • Which of the five university diversity goals will your unit address?
  • What action steps will your unit take to achieve these goals?
  • What measures or benchmarks will your unit use to evaluate progress?
  • What is your unit's timeline for evaluating progress?

5. How many diversity goals does my unit need to address?

Units may choose to address one or more university diversity goals. Units should focus on goals that relate best to unit priorities.

6. Is it acceptable if my unit includes different benchmarks than described in the plan?

The illustrative benchmarks noted in the Diversity Plan are intended to serve as suggestive but not exhaustive possibilities for assessing efforts made to address a particular diversity goal. Units are expected to articulate benchmarks which are significant for their specific context.

7. How detailed should unit reports be?

The baseline report is expected to provide a concise description of current/recent diversity programs and initiatives. The annual diversity plan report should provide sufficient detail to provide an accurate account of the action steps, benchmarks and timeline for each diversity goal addressed.

8. Can I work from past diversity reports that my unit has produced?

Yes, you are encouraged to update past reports in order to reflect current diversity initiatives and programs. If your unit produced a diversity report for the Chancellor's Task Force on Diversity, you may find this a useful starting point for the fall 2006 baseline report. If you need a file copy of this report, please contact Dr. Cookie Newsom.
