Leadership Institute FAQ
What's the difference between the Leadership Advantage and the Leadership Institute? While both programs seek to develop leadership qualities in students from underserved populations, the Leadership Institute is especially designed for sophomores and juniors to develop key leadership skills and experiences that will contribute to their future pursuits in business, non-profit organizations and higher education.
Who should apply to LI? Sophomores and juniors pursuing any major, who are from underserved populations, including African American, Hispanic/Latino/a, American Indian, and Asian American, as well as other students from low income and first generation college-going populations who meet the selection criteria below.
What are the selection criteria for LI?
- GPA of 2.7 or higher (Sophomores) or GPA of 3.0 or higher (Juniors)
- Any major
- Active or former participant in extra-curricular and leadership activities, including community service
What will I gain from participating in LI? LI offers you the chance to form direct connections to business, non-profit and educational professionals as you develop practical, marketable skills. You'll enhance your qualifications for great internships and post-graduation employment. And most of all you'll develop and improve your leadership, critical thinking and communications skills, all while participating in exciting hands-on projects and interactive professional simulation experiences. You'll also become a part of an exciting cohort of Carolina students, the LI scholars.
Who will lead the LI sessions? Each LA session will be lead by a practical facilitator who is a professional in the field of business, non-profit management or higher education.
If am I accepted into LI, do I need to participate in all of the LI sessions? Yes! Students expected to participate in all sessions. Tentative session dates are February 16, February 27, March 8, March 18, April 5, April 14 and April 23, plus a closing session on May 2, 2008.
I'm not interested in business. Is LI still for me? Yes! LI offers students the chance to get to know leaders not only from the business world, but also in non-profit management and graduate programs. No matter what your major or your career aspirations, LI provides you with the chance to develop your leadership qualities, explore career possibilities you haven't thought of yet, and gain important connections for your future.
